Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy (New Service)

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized form of physical therapy focused on assessing and treating the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that support the bladder, uterus/prostate, and bowel. These muscles—known as the pelvic floor—play a key role in bladder and bowel control, sexual function, and core stability.

Treatment typically begins with a detailed assessment. This may include a discussion of symptoms (such as incontinence, pelvic pain, or discomfort during pregnancy/postpartum), medical history, posture, breathing patterns, and movement habits. With consent, a physical examination may be performed externally and/or internally to evaluate muscle strength, coordination, tone, and any areas of tension or weakness.

Based on the findings, a personalized treatment plan is developed. This often includes targeted exercises to strengthen or relax the pelvic floor muscles, guidance on proper breathing and core engagement, posture correction, and strategies for bladder and bowel habits. Hands-on techniques such as soft tissue release, trigger point therapy, or stretching may also be used to reduce pain and improve muscle function.

Education is a major component of pelvic floor physiotherapy. Patients learn how daily activities—like lifting, sitting, or exercising—affect their pelvic health, and how to modify these habits to prevent strain or worsening symptoms.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help manage a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Urinary or fecal incontinence

  • Pelvic organ prolapse

  • Pelvic pain or pressure

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Prenatal and postpartum recovery

  • Core weakness or instability

Overall, the goal is to restore optimal function, reduce symptoms, and improve quality of life in a safe, respectful, and individualized way.
